What's the best "starter pipe?" The simple answer - briar. 

And that's what we sell.

There are very few premium materials that pipes are made from today. This is because wood burns, and many have toxins. Unfortunately, these materials are not regulated, especially when procuring from unreliable sources, like Chinese factories.

Briar is unique and better suited for pipes than any other wood due to its heat and moisture resistance, non-toxicity, durability, and ability to "cake." 

Furthermore, briar does not impart flavors into your smoke (though tobacco cake/residue can). 

At The Catholic Pipe Company, exceptions to briar include olive and morta - but 99% of our pipes are briar.

Stem materials can vary. Pipes in our Starter Packages will feature traditional vulcanite or modern acrylic stems. 

What's a pipe tamper?

A pipe tamper, or "pipe tool," is used to tamp down the tobacco while packing, as well as during smoking. This helps ensure proper air flow and cherry retention. 

Many variations of this tool exist. The Czech style tamper tool in our Starter Packages has three tools, the tamper, a spoon, and a rod. These tools can be used to ream and clean the pipe.

All packages include a genuine Catholic Pipe Company Zippo® pipe lighter. The reality of pipe smoking is that you will re-light most bowls, especially if engrossed in conversation. This differs from cigar smoking, as cigars stay lit much easier.

Relighting is normal. You might as well have an efficient way to do so, and these specialty lighters hit the mark.
